Summerlin, Las Vegas, and Henderson Nevada
Halloween is just around the corner, and festivities have already begun. Even as a dentist, we understand the draw to candy and sweet treats, which is why we’ve got some tips that will treat, not trick, your teeth this Halloween.
When it comes to indulging in a sweet treat or some Halloween candy in Summerlin this fall, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about if this is just an occasional treat, and as long as you follow proper oral hygiene habits.
However, there are some candies and treats that are better left off limits such as the following:
- Taffy
- Hard candy
- Caramels (including caramel apples)
- Sticky candy
- Starbursts and Now & Laters
These sticky candies can stick to your teeth, and become difficult to remove even when you brush. As the sugar lingers in the deep grooves and plaque that may already be on your teeth and around your gums, your risk of cavities increases. Plus, these candies, along with popcorn, nuts, and tortilla chips should also be avoided for patients with braces as these foods can damage or break the wires or brackets.
Enjoy a little, then rinse
Eating a little bit of sugar-laden treats now and then is not so bad, but it’s how you treat your teeth afterward that matters. It’s best to drink plenty of water while eating candy or other sweet treats. This helps to rinse the residual sugar out of your mouth and protect your teeth against decay. Once you are able, be sure to brush your teeth and floss to remove any plaque or sugar buildup that may still be left. The worst thing that you could do is not brush before bed. This would result in bathing your teeth in sugar all night long!
All or nothing
Believe it or not, but it’s best to indulge in candy all at once and be done. Continually snacking on candy throughout the day is the same as going to bed without brushing your teeth, you’re constantly bathing your teeth in sugar and not giving them a break. Instead, grab a handful, enjoy, and then brush and floss your teeth and be done with the candy for the day.
Keep your smile healthy
Even with proper oral hygiene efforts practiced at home, everyone still needs to visit their Summerlin dentist for routine dental care that includes cleanings and checkups. The most avid brushers and flosser still get tartar buildup that increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Tartar is a hard substance that sticks onto your teeth, and can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning or prophylaxis. These cleanings are recommended once every six months, sometimes more often for certain patients that are at a higher risk of dental diseases.
